Kalighat painting evolved as a unique genre of painting in the 19th century in West Bengal. From the depiction of gods and other mythological characters, these paintings developed over time to reflect a variety of themes. Kalighat 'patuas' (painters) produced these works of art to making a living by seeling to the mass market. The paintings over a period of time developed a distinct school of Indian painting.
